RISE

Medium: Acacia (Australian Blackwood)

Dimension: W 115 x L 110 x H 75 mm; W 77 x L 105 x H 27 mm

Inspiration

A rooster crows to signal the rising sun. The idea of awakening and rising with the morning sun inspired this design, having an upward movement of lines. Roosters are independent but also loyal and supporting mates; the bowl and base/support can be used independently or inter-dependently. The straightforward and conservative nature of “rooster people” inspired the flow of the bowl’s top profile.

Production

Depth of the bowl was carefully carved towards the core to create a resonant pattern. The remaining product was carved according to wood-grains’ directions to prevent chipping off big chunks of wood. Sanding of the wood in its direction minimize appearance of holes due to wood’s porous nature. Natural crack from wood was fixed with a butterfly joint.

Functionality

The bowl is multi-purpose but a suggested usage will be a airplant holder. The natural crack and hole from the core allows quick drainage of water, hence preventing airplants from over-soaking. Bowl and base can be used together or separately. The ergonomics properly fit and support the hands, allowing for easy and comfortable handling when shifting the plants for optimum sunlight.

Originality or Uniqueness

Design made use of natural “imperfections” for aesthetics and functional purpose. While keeping its natural characteristics, design was altered with them. The instability of the bowl does not restrict the functionality, as it can be place on its base for support when required; the placement is intuitive as only a particular spot fits the unique asymmetrical curvature.
